Open-Ended Articulation App Review + Giveaway!

October 8, 2013

Blogiversary fun day 2!  Today, I’ve got an awesome app review for you and a giveaway!  Open-ended Articulation is a new app developed by one of my favorite slp bloggers, Erik X. Raj.  It’s perfect for carry-over of those later developing sounds.

On the home page (above), you are able to choose to work on several sounds including /s, z, r, l, sh, ch, th/.  You can also choose to shuffle all of the sounds together by tapping the small shuffle button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Each sound is further divided by word position and blends, or choose to mix up all of the positions.
Each target word is presented in a type of story starter.  The student is to respond to the open-ended prompt using his/her correct speech sounds.
The “Hear the Sentence” button at the bottom causes the sentence to be read to you.
The “Hear the Answer” button (bottom right) gives a strong modeled response of an answer to the question.  My kids love listening to Mr. Raj give his silly answers to the questions.
This is perfect for kids who are working on carry-over of their artic sounds.  I’ve used the mess out of this app in my 5-minute quick artic sessions.
The small smiley face button on the home screen will bring you to the above thank-you page.  You and your kiddos can get to know Mr. Raj a little bit more here.
The lowercase i button on the home screen will bring you to an information page.  It gives detailed instructions and examples of how to use this app in therapy.
This app can also be easily adapted for kids working on oral expression and conversational skills.
You can grab this app for $4.99 from iTunes HERE!
What I dig about this app:
  • Great price!  It’s low enough that I can recommend that parents purchase it for extra practice.
  • Targets a much needed skill.  Most of the articulation apps that I own do not have a conversation-level practice piece.
  • Very easy to navigate and simple to use.
What could make it better:
  • I wish there was an option for me to take data inside the app.
You can enter to win a copy of your very own on the Rafflecopter below!

I work with the middle grades, so I have a lot of articulation students that are on the final lap of generalization. This would be a fantastic way to work on their carryover but also maintain their attention. It’d be great to have to show parents for creative/inexpensive ways they can encourage practice and home generalization too!

I am always looking for ways to practice carryover skills. I would also use this app to practice fluency skills, answering questions, and as conversation starters to practice generalizing language skills.
