There are so many benefits to going digital. Let me take a quick sec to name a few: It saves paper. It saves ink. It’s accessible from anywhere and on multiple devices. You can copy and paste. Everything looks neater. You can generate charts from the data. Did I mention you can copy and paste?
The past couple of years, I’ve been going digital with my student tally sheets. And I’ve loved it. You can take digital data several different ways. Before I get into the specifics on how I do mine, here are a few options:
1. SLP Toolkit
If you aren’t familiar with this online tool, it’s definitely worth looking into. Not only can you take daily data, but there are assessments, progress monitoring, goal banks, scheduling tools, and more. You can keep student data right there on the site.
2. SLP Now
This one is a membership site by my friend, Marisha! It’s pretty dang amazing. It gives materials and lesson plans, and allows you to track students’ goals, progress, and sessions. You can even physically take data on site with the digital tallies. Love that!
3. SWIVEL Scheduler
SWIVEL was developed by my friend, Maureen, from The Speech Bubble. It’s a simple online scheduling tool that is great not only for scheduling but for keeping track of student goals. You can generate data sheets and upload the pdf into Notability to take data on the sheet. And now, with the new online data option, you can tally right there on the screen.
4. Digital Planner Pages
The latest update to my Speech Therapy Planner has a fully digital option. It’s all on GOOGLE slides and includes editable data sheets. You can definitely keep these for your students by duplicating the pages or pasting them into a separate document.
5. GOOGLE Sheets
OK this is the way I do my tally sheets everyday! I use this template below.
At the top, I keep all of their identifying information. I also put their goals across the top, then type each objective in the different columns. If you freeze the view to the objectives line, you’ll be able to always see them when you scroll!
I love using Google Sheets for my data because:
- You can access it from any device, as long as you have internet and can access your drive.
- I can easily see what goals I need to work on, since everything is in full view.
- Everything is fully customizable (is that a word?), so you can put whatever information is required by your district.
- You can generate a chart based on the data by highlighting the data points and clicking “insert chart!”
- You can copy and paste into medicaid or other programs easily, since everything is typed!
- Oh, and also… IT’S FREE!!

Hello! I love these ideas! Especially your daily tally sheets and the google docs for electronic data! I need to make the switch but haven’t found the right system yet! How often do you collect data? Every session? Once a week? Once a month? etc. Also, do you have any tips or advice for making the google spreadsheet like the one you shared?
On a somewhat related note, when doing therapy how long do you stick with each objective before switching to others? For articulation and for language goals?
